Key Stage 3 Science

Year 7, 8 and 9 students at SSSO enjoy varied and exciting science lessons.

The KS3 course is based on the Go Science! resources and started 2 years ago, following changes in the National curriculum.

In year 7, students study the following topics:

1
Staying Alive
2
Why are we different?
3
What are things made of?
4
Be Reactive
5
How things move
6
Using Energy
7
Earth, Space & Beyond

 Year 8, the topics are:

1
Survival
2
Health
3
Ecology
4
Reactions
5
Heating & Cooling
6
Light & Sound
7
Magnetism
8
Changing Earth: Rocks

At the moment, our year 9 students still follow the previous course (based on "Eureka"). From next academic year, all year groups will be studying science according to the new specifications.

We are in the process of implementing APP within all our topics. The assessment tasks are designed to assess students in a more purposeful and informal way, with clear level descriptors and targets for improvement at each stage. The APP for Science consists of 5 Assessment Focus (AF) strands:

AF1 – Thinking scientifically

AF2 - Understanding applications and implications of science
AF3 – Communicating and Collaborating in science
AF4 – Using investigative approaches

AF5 – Working Critically with evidence

which, in turn, are each divided into four substrands. The students are assessed on particular strands for each task. Their levels are carefully monitored and are used for target setting, in order to ensure improvement throughout their KS3 course.
