Key Stage 3
The music curriculum at key stage three (Years 7-9) focuses on the following areas of study:
(1) Practical performance technique in singing (RSCM Voice for Life & ABRSM Grades 1 to 3);
(2) Composing skills;
(3) Aural skills (ABRSM Grades 1 to 5);
(4) Theory knowledge (ABRSM Grades 1 to 2);
(5) Repertoire knowledge.
Students receive a 50 minute lesson once a week.
In addition, it is the department’s aim to allow all students the opportunity to learn an instrument with a specialist teacher. Students who are hard working and show a natural gift for their instrument are given the option to continue their studies up to the end of year 13.
Work studied in curriculum lessons feeds into ABRSM practical examinations, as well as concerts, cathedral services and other performance opportunities. The breadth of areas of study provides a solid foundation for the greater focus on academic learning required at GCSE level in music.
