Industrial Strike Action
We have been informed by the NUT that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on Wednesday 26th March 2014.
This action is not against the school itself but is part of national industrial action organised by these trades unions about changes to the pensions schemes and the pay and conditions of their members.
There is no requirement on unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, and it may be that they will not know themselves as there is no obligation on members of unions to obey a strike call. However, a number of staff have indicated that they are likely to take part in this strike action.
Neither the governing body nor the headteacher is legally allowed to close the school ‘in sympathy’ with the strike and we will not do so. Our main concern is the safety of our students. It is likely therefore that the school will need to be closed to students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10, as we endeavour to protect the education of those preparing for examinations in year 11 and the sixth form.
Because we may not know until very late how many staff will be available to work, any changes to this decision to partially close may have to be taken at the last minute. Notification will be given via text and on the school website.
We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible.
